Wrap Up

Well what an amazing 2023 IBSA World Games, so many highlights, memories and outstanding contributions by our athletes. We saw a record number of athletes and support staff at the games, with Australia having the 3rd largest contingent of the 70 nations in attendance.

We saw a number of athletes compete on the international stage for the first time, including John Hanna in the Men’s -90kg Powerlifting and Taylor Gosens (J2 +100kg) and Jake Fitzpatrick (J2 – 60kg) in the Judo event. We also saw athletes in Blind Cricket and Blind and Low Vision Tennis make their international debut’s also.

We had athletes such as Raissa Martin and Brodie Benson (Women’s Goalball), Sam Byrne and Daniel Pritchard (Men’s Goalball) competing at their 2nd or 3rd IBSA Games.

We had a number great personal bests or outstanding performances, as well as athletes push through pain and adversity just to get on the pitch/court/field to be able to live out their dreams of competing at the games, so many individual stories and experiences.

As a team we brought home 11 Medals, which is a tremendous acheivement:

5 Gold:

  • Grace Hobbs – Women’s B4/5 Tennis Singles
  • Michael Leigh – Men’s B3 Tennis Singles
  • Ross Patterson – Men’s B4/5 Tennis Singles
  • Ross Patterson/Michael Leigh – Men’s B2/4 Tennis Doubles
  • Grace Hobbs/Courtney Webeck – Women’s B2/4 Tennis Doubles
3 Silver:
  • Australian Women’s Blind Cricket Team
  • Mark Haskett – Men’s B2 Tennis Singles
  • Mark Haskett/Arato Katsuda-Green – Men’s B2/4 Tennis Doubles
3 Bronze:
  • John Hanna – Men’s -90kg Powerlifting
  • Arato Katsuda-Green – Men’s B4/5 Tennis Singles
  • Courtney Webeck – Women’s B2 Tennis Singles

Our hope as is that more people with a vision impairment will see that there are a range of pathways to get involved in sport, from taking part socially all the way through to competing on the international stage, more than ever this is becoming a reality and we hope that in 2027 at the next IBSA World Games, we will have an even bigger team and more people setting their dreams and goals towards competing.
